Week 6 - Cross Content

In observing in the middle school this week (7th grade Pre-Algebra) I Social Studies teacher cam over and asked for myself and/or cooperating teacher to review a worksheet that was embedded into his lesson plan to ensure the answers were correct on his key, but also how we got to the answer, so he could better understand if the students had an incorrect answers, or they were stuck with how to process the information in getting the correct answer.  The content was on World War 1 and how soldiers had to dig trenches on the battlefield.  It gave some small information like it took one minute for four shovels, and (I think it was) those four shovels were equal to one cubic foot of dirt.  From there were the questions like: "How many soldiers would it take...", "If one solider dug...", etc.  I felt it was fairly extensive in Math for a social studies lesson, but I also found it great for the heavy cross content within the lesson.  I feel that is my week area to blend multiple contents in one lesson.  I have some project based ideas that will bring ELA in, but that's about it right now.

The lesson plan shared this week is complimentary to last week's an is a continuation of the standards for students to research text, form opinions, and (through analysis) summarize their readings.  The strategy relies upon the graphic organizers utilized as worksheets within the lesson plan.  Enjoy.

Introduction

Hello EDUC 338,

I am an active duty United States Sailor with over twenty-one years of naval service; set to retire 31 March, 2017.  I am currently stationed in St. Louis, MO as a fleet liaison to the Boeing Company.  I have only been with Columbia College since October of 2014 and have completed my BGS with a Minor in Education, I am currently enrolled in the Post-Bacc Teacher Certification Program with the hopes of student teaching in the fall.  My ultimate goal is to become a middle school math teacher, but the reality is I will probably get on as a sub somewhere and maybe turn that into a long-term sub thing and go from there.  Personally, I am a single father of three balancing a busy schedule of my daughter's soccer, my son’s little league team, and practicing Jiu Jitsu (all four of us) on top of the three classes I am taking this semester.  I also enjoy remaining active with outdoor activities, such as hiking, running, paddle boarding, etc. 

I look to learning from and working with you all this term.
